Hoa Sen University – HSU

HSU Leverages WoS to Strengthen Research and International Integration

On the morning of October 20, 2026, Hoa Sen University (HSU) marked a new step in strengthening its research resources with the launch of the Web of Science (WoS) database and a seminar titled “Scientific Databases and Research in a New Era”. Organized by the HSU Library in collaboration with iGroup Asia Pacific Ltd. Vietnam, the seminar brought together representatives from universities, research institutes, lecturers, researchers, postgraduate students, and undergraduates to explore the role of scientific databases in today’s evolving research landscape.

Investment in Research Resources and Global Academic Collaboration

In his opening remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr Nguyen Huu Huy Nhut, HSU President, highlighted the launch of WoS as an important milestone in strengthening the University’s research foundation. He explained that investing in knowledge infrastructure would expand access to valuable scientific information, equipping lecturers, researchers, postgraduate students, and undergraduates with resources to advance their research.

He also said HSU’s vision was to bring knowledge, education, and practical application closer together while fostering stronger connections with the international academic community. He added that global integration involved not only joining international academic networks but also contributing meaningful research, distinctive perspectives, and practical solutions that addressed shared challenges and advanced academic dialogue.

Marking an important milestone in HSU’s research development, the WoS activation ceremony welcomed representatives from Clarivate, iGroup, HSU’s Board of Presidents, and universities across the region as the database was officially introduced for use throughout the University. At the event, HSU was identified as the fifth institution in Viet Nam to implement WoS university-wide, reflecting its continued investment in research resources and academic development.

WoS: A Global Platform for Scientific Knowledge

Clarivate is a global information and analytics company that delivers data-driven insights and solutions across multiple sectors, from academia and government to intellectual property, life sciences, and healthcare.

WoS provides researchers with powerful tools to navigate scholarly literature and uncover valuable research insights. Users can search and filter publications, examine citation metrics, explore author profiles, and analyze research data within one platform. Its rigorous content selection process and standardized metadata help ensure that scholarly information is organized, connected, and accessible for research and analysis.

Through a hands-on demonstration, Dr. Ahmed Bourghida, Research & Analytics for Academics & Governments, Southeast Asia & India, Clarivate Singapore, introduced participants to key WoS search and analysis functions. These included finding publications, sorting results by citation count, filtering for open-access documents, and examining research data by country. Participants were also encouraged to create personal accounts to save their searches, configure alerts, and keep track of newly published work related to their research interests. He also introduced WoS Research Assistant, an AI-powered tool available to users at HSU. Designed to help researchers at different experience levels make effective use of WoS Core Collection data, the tool provides task-based guidance and intelligent support for exploring scholarly literature and generating research insights.

With coverage dating back to 1900, WoS allows users to explore how scholarly knowledge has evolved, uncover emerging trends and research gaps, evaluate research performance, and check retraction records to support research integrity.

Scientific Data for Effective Research Development and Management

The seminar also featured a specialized session by Dr. Le Van Ut, HSU Vice President for Scientific Research, who discussed how scientific data, especially WoS, could guide research development and management.

He noted that the platform helped researchers explore existing literature, recognize promising research directions, identify knowledge gaps, connect with potential collaborators, and choose appropriate journals. He further explained that citation data supported research evaluation, performance comparisons, and evidence-based decision-making.
