From Theory to Visualization: HSU Students Explore Qualitative Research Methods

Throughout every academic and scientific research journey, methodology is fundamental to meaningful inquiry and continues to pose significant challenges for students. Aiming to make qualitative research clearer, more systematic, and more accessible, the Office of Research Affairs – Science Journal hosted the workshop “Qualitative Research Methods” on January 29, 2026, at the HSU Library, Thanh Thai Campus, attracting a large number of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Qualitative Research Methods: From Theory to Visual Approaches

The workshop offered a comprehensive and well-structured overview of qualitative research, a methodology widely applied in the social sciences and humanities. Through this, participants had a valuable chance to deepen their understanding of key concepts, including data classification, data collection methods, sample selection, and common approaches to qualitative data analysis.

Methodological concepts once considered abstract were conveyed in an accessible way, closely linked to HSU students’ practical learning and research experiences.

Thematic Analysis: From Understanding to Mastery

 Through clear explanations and practical examples, Dr. Bui Yen Ngoc, a Lecturer in the Faculty of Languages – Psychology at HSU, effectively demonstrated the Braun and Clarke thematic analysis model. Attendants were guided step-by-step from raw data to meaningful research insights.

Her approachable and well-structured teaching style allowed students to better understand and imagine applying the method to future research projects, academic essays, and dissertations.

Experiential learning and Critical thinking

Designed as a flexible learning space, the Qualitative Research Methods combined theoretical foundations with hands-on practice through handouts and group discussion activities. Collaborative scenario analysis, perspective sharing, and practice with sample data fostered an open academic atmosphere, motivating students to actively engage, ask questions, and sharpen their critical thinking skills.

An essential methodological stepping stone for learning and scientific research

Concluding with rich professional and practical exchanges, the workshop equipped students with a solid foundation in qualitative research while offering clear guidance on suitable approaches for future academic and scientific applications.

Through these academic activities, HSU continues to strengthen our role in fostering students’ research competencies, scientific thinking, and long-term learning development.
