Following an academic exchange and collaboration with the President’s Board of Hoa Sen University, Prof. Phil Cleaver, an international expert in creative design and typography, will host a talk show for students, faculty members, and the design community at HSU.

With over four decades of experience in design, Prof. Phil Cleaver is widely recognized for his expertise in graphic design, typography, branding, and publishing design. He is currently Professor of Creative Industries at Middlesex University and Creative Principal of et al design consultants Ltd.

Recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the D&AD Yellow Pencil, often described as the “Oscar of the design industry”, and multiple honors for book design, typography, and publishing in the UK and internationally, he is recognized as an exceptional figure who bridges academia and professional creative practice. He is an educator and also a highly skilled creative practitioner. His lectures, workshops, and keynote presentations have been featured at universities, museums, and leading design forums worldwide.

Moreover, his presence at HSU not only created a meaningful talk show on creativity but also offered students, faculty members, and the design community an opportunity to engage with profound, cross-cultural, and highly practical design thinking from a master of the field.

During the talk show, he will share his perspective on how a book can become a “space” where visual design, language, and art come together to tell the story of a culture. The talk show focuses on three key approaches to the art of book design:

  • Culture as visual language: A nation’s culture can be expressed as a “visual language”, where colors, symbols, typography, and layouts are transformed into design ideas;
  • Bilingual fusion: Discover how two languages coexist in a single book, creating a fusion of two cultures; and,
  • The three-dimensional form: The book as a work of art, where its shape, structure, and spatial design convey a story that goes beyond the written word.
